The Wall Street Journal reported that SpaceX sold stock at $186 per share worth $500 million to its private investors on December 18, 2018.

On August 19, 2020, SpaceX finished one of the largest single funding rounds by any privately held company with $1.9 billion in new investments. This event increased SpaceX’s valuation to a $46 billion market cap.

SpaceX stock is currently a privately traded equity not available on the public stock exchanges.

Investors can’t buy Space stock through their regular brokers because it’s currently a private company. For retail investors, the only way to get exposure to SpaceX as an investment is by purchasing a fund or publicly traded company that owns private equity shares of SpaceX stock.

Elon Musk currently has a 54% stake in SpaceX valued at approximately $24.8 billion.

Business Insider reported in December 2020 that SpaceX was going to close another funding round with investors in early 2021 with the intention of growing its valuation. Bloomberg confirmed Business Insider’s story. The initial reports stated that SpaceX was trying to double its valuation up to $92 billion but Elon Musk tweeted that this was not true.

How does SpaceX make money? The company currently makes money by launching satellites into orbit around the earth and also by transporting cargo to and from the International Space Station. SpaceX currently has an edge as it charges customers much less per launch compared to its competitors.

The current SpaceX valuation as of early 2021 is approximately $46 billion.
