Ray Dalio is one of the most successful money managers in history in both lifetime returns and the size of his hedge fund. His rise to success began with the founding of Bridgewater Associates, a global investment firm he started in 1975. Ray Dalio started Bridgewater Associates from his two-bedroom apartment in New York City. The company quickly and steadily grew over a few decades into a multibillion-dollar hedge fund and now manages capital for clients around the globe. Bridgewater currently has $18.32 billion in assets under management.
He developed an innovative approach to investing based on principles that focused on understanding markets and making decisions objectively. This strategy has enabled him to succeed in the financial markets, making him a billionaire.
He may no longer be Bridewater’s co-chief investment officer; leaving his role last October to enter semi-retirement, he has kept a place on Bridgewater’s board. Most of the Bridgewater portfolio remains what Dalio picked under his management with the firm. So it reflects his choices for investments going into 2023.
